I have a feeling it has something to do with Thunderbolt though, which has everything, including graphics running through it, which means the graphics cards, and the 'riser' have to have some connection through. I wasn't offering moving the cables around as a solution. Thanks for the input though, it's nice to know I'm not the only one suffering. I sort of wish the issue was THAT predictable, certainly would have helped me convince Apple there was a problem. Once I reboot, I rarely get another freeze the same day, but like yourself, I've tried moving cables around in different configurations to see if there's any improvement. I hope this issue becomes defined because I'm not going to shell out another $6k on a new MP for a while. I can't say for sure this a result of me 'cleaning' the conns, but as a retired field service engineer, 99% of the time there was a failure it had to do with connectors. IF I don't do that, the freeze is guaranteed to happen several more times that day. What seems to help in my case is to shut it down after the reset boot and move the TB connectors around, in/out a few times. If I wait for a minute or two and start clicking the keyboard and moving the mouse I'll get the beach ball.sometimes the cursor just disappears and then comes back.the only way out is a hard reset. I've had this problem since day one.the graphics freeze, usually but not always, preceded by a slight audio glitch if it's playing.then the entire machine becomes unresponsive as the playback continues into the sunset.

I think I might have to go the same route you did and buy another Mac Pro.

Not sure what that means, but it's super frustrating. What's different from your experience is that according Apple, the engineers can't use my videos I've taken to help. I've been trying to show them everything I can to prove that it's not the OS. I've been back and forth with Apple since January. That sounds a lot like what I'm going through. I ended up selling one of them for a slight loss but was never without my work computer and now I haven't had a freeze on the new computer in almost a year. At that point they just gave me a new trash can. I did this until a third fix didn't solve the problem. They started replacing one GPU at a time and I would get it back, retest it and still get freezes. At this point there was nothing to eliminate except that it was the computer itself. Then I swapped the RAM from the bad trash can to the new trash can and ran it for a couple of weeks. I did this for about a week to gather my info. I used a clone of the system drive on an external USB 3 SSD and ran it on the bad trash can until it froze and shot video of the freeze. How I ultimately proved it was by buying a refurbed quad core trash can. Of course it was always that they couldn't reproduce it and it was an OS error or Avid error or bad RAM or anything else. I shot several pieces of video to show the behavior when it would freeze up but continue playing audio. Took me several go arounds over the phone and finally at the Apple Store to get it resolved. I had a quad core trash can that I was having this issue with for almost a year before I did anything. I'll keep you up to date as things progress. That seemed to help convince Apple techs that I'm not imagining things. I had no issues while running off the MacBook Pro. I cloned my mac pro's operating system drive, installed it into my MacBook Pro and ran the exact same setup with the exact same peripherals plugged in. Tech support keeps relying on the hardware tests, which keep coming back with zero issues, so I ran a different experiment. I've done clean installs of sierra 10.12.1 and 10.12.4, and now Ive moved back to Yosemite 10.10.5, which has proven to be much more stable than sierra. While I've been waiting for them, I've been conducting my own experiments. They're finally taking my claim seriously. I've been contacting Apple tech support for a few months trying to narrow down the issue.

I mean if it can be solved in future OSX releases then fine or else what ?

Could someone narrow it down to whether it's a software or hardware issue ? It's really frustrating.
